About this Chapter

In Zechariah 7, the people of Bethel sent a delegation to the house of God to ask the priests and the prophets if they should continue to mourn and fast in the fifth month as they had done for many years. The Lord responded by asking them if they had really been fasting for Him or for themselves. He reminded them of the true purpose of fasting, which is to seek justice, show mercy, and care for the oppressed. The Lord then reminded the people of their ancestors' disobedience, who refused to listen to the prophets' warnings and turned a deaf ear to God's commands. Because of their disobedience, God's anger was kindled against them, and He scattered them among the nations. The Lord concluded by saying that just as their ancestors' hearts became hardened and unresponsive to God's voice, so too their own hearts had become hardened. He urged them to listen to His words and return to Him with all their hearts, so that He could bless them and dwell among them once again.
