Zechariah 11:4
This is what the LORD my God says: "Pasture the flock marked for slaughter.
In this chapter, Zechariah speaks of two shepherds: one who represents God and the other who represents the people. The chapter begins with the Lord instructing Zechariah to shepherd the flock doomed to slaughter. The Lord declares that He will no longer have compassion on the people and will allow them to be destroyed by their enemies. Zechariah then takes on the role of the foolish shepherd, who is a symbol of the leaders of the people. The foolish shepherd does not care for the flock and only seeks to exploit them for his own gain. Zechariah breaks two staffs, one named Favor and the other named Union, to symbolize the breaking of the covenant between God and His people. The chapter concludes with Zechariah being paid thirty pieces of silver, which he throws into the house of the Lord. This act represents the rejection and betrayal of God's chosen shepherd, foreshadowing the betrayal of Jesus by Judas for the same amount of money.
