Matthew 3:1
In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the Desert of Judea
In this chapter, John the Baptist appears in the wilderness, preaching a message of repentance and baptizing people in the Jordan River. He is described as wearing clothes made of camel's hair and a leather belt around his waist. Many people from Jerusalem, Judea, and the whole region of the Jordan come to him, confessing their sins and being baptized by him. John's main message is that the kingdom of heaven is near, and he urges the people to repent and turn back to God. He warns them not to rely on their ancestry as children of Abraham, but to bear fruit in keeping with repentance. John also prophesies about the coming of Jesus, saying that he will baptize with the Holy Spirit and with fire. In this chapter, Jesus himself comes to be baptized by John. John initially hesitates, saying that Jesus should baptize him instead, but Jesus insists, saying that it is necessary to fulfill all righteousness. After Jesus is baptized, the heavens open, and the Spirit of God descends on him like a dove. A voice from heaven declares, 'This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.'
