Matthew 15:1
Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked,
In this chapter, Jesus confronts the religious leaders about their traditions and the way they prioritize them over God's commandments. The Pharisees and teachers of the law question Jesus' disciples about why they don't follow the tradition of washing hands before eating. Jesus responds by exposing their hypocrisy and quoting the prophet Isaiah, saying that they honor God with their lips but their hearts are far from Him. He teaches that it is not what goes into a person's mouth that defiles them, but what comes out of their heart. Jesus then explains to the crowd that it is not what goes into the body from the outside that defiles a person, but rather the evil thoughts, words, and actions that come from within. He lists various sins such as murder, adultery, theft, and false testimony, and emphasizes that these are what defile a person. Jesus emphasizes the importance of purity of heart and condemns the religious leaders for their hypocrisy and their neglect of God's commandments in favor of their own traditions. Finally, a Canaanite woman approaches Jesus, pleading for her demon-possessed daughter to be healed. At first, Jesus seems to ignore her, but she persists in her faith and humility. Jesus commends her great faith and heals her daughter, demonstrating that faith and humility are more important than religious traditions or ethnic backgrounds. This chapter challenges us to examine our own hearts and priorities, and to prioritize a genuine relationship with God over empty religious practices.
