About this Chapter

In Matthew 19, Jesus teaches about marriage and divorce. He starts by quoting from the book of Genesis, saying that in the beginning, God created male and female and that a man shall leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. Jesus emphasizes that what God has joined together, let no one separate. The Pharisees then ask Jesus about the legality of divorce, referring to the law of Moses. Jesus responds by saying that Moses permitted divorce because of the hardness of people's hearts, but from the beginning, it was not so. He explains that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery. The disciples are astonished by Jesus' teaching and remark that it is better not to marry if divorce is not allowed. Jesus acknowledges that not everyone can accept this teaching, but those who can should. He also mentions that some are born eunuchs, some are made eunuchs by others, and some choose to live as eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven.
