Matthew 26:47
While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people.

About this Chapter

In this chapter, Jesus is betrayed and arrested. Judas, one of Jesus' disciples, leads a group of people, including the chief priests and elders, to arrest Jesus. Judas identifies Jesus with a kiss, which was a sign of betrayal. Jesus is then taken to the high priest for questioning. During his trial, false witnesses come forward, but their testimonies do not agree. Finally, the high priest asks Jesus if he is the Messiah, the Son of God. Jesus responds affirmatively, stating that he is. This angers the high priest, who accuses Jesus of blasphemy and condemns him to death. After Jesus is arrested, his disciples scatter and abandon him. Peter, one of his closest disciples, denies knowing Jesus three times, just as Jesus had predicted. Meanwhile, Jesus is taken to the governor, Pontius Pilate, who finds no basis for charging Jesus with a crime but, due to the pressure from the crowd, decides to have him crucified.
