About this Chapter

In Luke 4, Jesus is led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness where he is tempted by the devil for forty days. During this time, Jesus fasts and is hungry. The devil tempts Jesus three times, but Jesus resists each temptation by quoting scripture and relying on the word of God. The first temptation involves the devil tempting Jesus to turn stones into bread, to satisfy his hunger. Jesus responds by quoting Deuteronomy 8:3, saying that man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. The second temptation involves the devil taking Jesus to a high place and offering him all the kingdoms of the world in exchange for worship. Jesus responds by quoting Deuteronomy 6:13, saying that we should worship and serve only God. The third temptation involves the devil taking Jesus to the pinnacle of the temple and challenging him to throw himself down, saying that the angels will save him. Jesus responds by quoting Deuteronomy 6:16, saying that we should not put the Lord our God to the test.
