About this Chapter

In Luke 5, Jesus was teaching by the Lake of Gennesaret, and a crowd had gathered around him. He saw two boats by the shore and got into one of them, which belonged to Simon. Jesus asked Simon, who was a fisherman, to push the boat out a little from the shore. Then Jesus sat down and taught the people from the boat. After he finished speaking, Jesus told Simon to go out into the deep water and let down the nets for a catch. Simon was skeptical because they had fished all night and caught nothing, but he obeyed Jesus' command. When they did as Jesus said, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. They signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and both boats were filled with so many fish that they began to sink. Simon Peter fell at Jesus' knees and said, 'Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!' Jesus reassured him and said, 'Don't be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.' Simon, James, and John, who were partners in the fishing business, left everything and followed Jesus. They were amazed at the miraculous catch of fish and recognized that Jesus was someone special.
