About this Chapter

In Luke 6, Jesus spends the night praying to God on a mountainside. When morning comes, he calls his disciples and chooses twelve of them to be apostles. These twelve are Simon (whom Jesus also named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot, Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot who became a traitor. After choosing the apostles, Jesus comes down from the mountainside and stands on a level place. He begins to teach his disciples and a large crowd about love and forgiveness. He tells them to love their enemies, do good to those who hate them, bless those who curse them, and pray for those who mistreat them. Jesus also teaches them to not judge others, to be merciful, and to forgive others as God forgives them. Jesus uses parables to illustrate his teachings. He talks about a tree being known by its fruit, a good tree producing good fruit and a bad tree producing bad fruit. He also talks about building a strong foundation, comparing those who hear his words and put them into practice to a wise man who builds his house on a solid foundation. Jesus ends his teaching by emphasizing the importance of putting his words into practice.
