About this Chapter

In Luke 19, Jesus enters the city of Jericho and encounters a man named Zacchaeus, who was a chief tax collector and wealthy. Zacchaeus, being short in stature, climbs a sycamore-fig tree to get a better view of Jesus. When Jesus reaches the spot, He looks up and tells Zacchaeus to come down because He must stay at his house. Zacchaeus joyfully welcomes Jesus into his home. However, the people around them grumble, saying that Jesus is going to be the guest of a sinner. Zacchaeus then stands up and makes a bold declaration. He promises to give half of his possessions to the poor and to repay four times the amount to anyone he has cheated. Jesus responds by declaring that salvation has come to Zacchaeus' house, for he too is a son of Abraham. This encounter with Jesus transforms Zacchaeus' life. He goes from being a despised tax collector to a man who repents and seeks to make amends for his wrongdoings. Jesus emphasizes that His mission is to seek and save the lost, and Zacchaeus is a prime example of this. Through this story, we learn about the transformative power of encountering Jesus and the importance of repentance and restitution.
