Easy Bible・Luke 23
Luke 23:1
Then the whole assembly rose and led him off to Pilate.
In this chapter, Jesus is brought before Pilate, the Roman governor, and Herod, the ruler of Galilee. The religious leaders accuse Jesus of misleading the people and stirring up trouble. Pilate finds no basis for their charges and sends Jesus to Herod, who is delighted to see Jesus and hopes to see him perform a miracle. However, Jesus remains silent and Herod mocks him before sending him back to Pilate. Pilate then addresses the crowd and offers to release either Jesus or a notorious criminal named Barabbas. The crowd, influenced by the religious leaders, demands the release of Barabbas and the crucifixion of Jesus. Pilate tries to release Jesus, but the crowd insists on his crucifixion. Pilate reluctantly gives in to their demands and hands Jesus over to be crucified. As Jesus is led away to be crucified, a large crowd follows him, including women who are mourning and lamenting. Jesus turns to them and says that they should weep for themselves and their children, for the days are coming when people will say that blessed are the childless women and wombs that never bore and breasts that never nursed. Jesus then speaks of the future destruction of Jerusalem and the suffering that will come upon the people.
