John 5:1
Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for a feast of the Jews.

About this Chapter

In this chapter, Jesus goes to Jerusalem and comes across a pool called Bethesda, where many disabled people used to lie. Among them was a paralyzed man who had been there for 38 years. Jesus approaches the man and asks if he wants to get well. The man explains that he has no one to help him get into the pool when the water is stirred, which was believed to have healing powers. Jesus then heals the man instantly, telling him to pick up his mat and walk. This healing took place on the Sabbath, which was a day of rest according to Jewish law. The religious leaders confront the healed man for carrying his mat on the Sabbath, and he tells them that the man who healed him told him to do so. When they ask who this man is, the healed man does not know, as Jesus had slipped away into the crowd. Later, Jesus finds the healed man in the temple and tells him to stop sinning or something worse may happen to him. The man then goes and tells the religious leaders that it was Jesus who healed him. This angers the religious leaders, as they see Jesus' healing on the Sabbath and his claim to be equal with God as a violation of their laws.
