John 10:11
"I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
In John 10, Jesus uses the metaphor of a shepherd to describe himself. He says that he is the good shepherd who lays down his life for his sheep. He contrasts himself with the hired hand who does not care for the sheep and runs away when danger comes. Jesus explains that he knows his sheep and they know him, just as the Father knows him and he knows the Father. He emphasizes that he has come to give his sheep eternal life and that no one can snatch them out of his hand. Jesus also talks about the relationship between himself and his sheep. He says that his sheep listen to his voice and follow him. He knows each of his sheep by name and leads them. He assures his followers that he is the gate for the sheep and that whoever enters through him will be saved and find pasture. In this chapter, Jesus reveals his role as the Good Shepherd who cares for and protects his followers. He shows his deep love and commitment by willingly sacrificing himself for their sake. Through his teachings, he invites his listeners to trust in him, follow his voice, and find eternal security in him.
