About this Chapter

In this chapter, Jesus receives news that his friend Lazarus is sick. However, instead of immediately going to him, Jesus waits for two more days and tells his disciples that Lazarus' sickness will not end in death. When Jesus finally arrives in Bethany, Lazarus has already been dead and buried for four days. Jesus comforts Lazarus' sisters, Martha and Mary, and assures them that Lazarus will rise again. Jesus then prays to God, thanking Him for always hearing His prayers. Jesus goes to the tomb, tells the people to remove the stone covering the entrance, and then calls out to Lazarus to come out. To everyone's amazement, Lazarus walks out of the tomb, still wrapped in burial clothes. This miracle of raising Lazarus from the dead is a powerful demonstration of Jesus' authority over death. It foreshadows Jesus' own resurrection and serves as a sign of his divinity. Through this miracle, Jesus shows that he is the resurrection and the life, and that whoever believes in him will live, even though they die. This event also leads to many people believing in Jesus, while others go to the Pharisees to report what Jesus has done. The raising of Lazarus not only reveals Jesus' power over death, but also his deep compassion and love for his friends. Jesus weeps when he sees the grief of Martha, Mary, and the others mourning Lazarus' death. This shows us that Jesus understands and empathizes with our pain and sorrow. It is a reminder that Jesus is not distant or indifferent to our suffering, but is present with us in our times of need.
