Easy Bible・John 12
John 12:1
Six days before the Passover, Jesus arrived at Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.
In this chapter, Jesus is anointed with expensive perfume by Mary, the sister of Lazarus, at a dinner in Bethany. Judas Iscariot, one of Jesus' disciples, objects to the extravagance, but Jesus defends Mary's actions, saying that she has prepared him for his burial. Many people, including the chief priests, come to see Jesus and Lazarus, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. As news of Jesus' presence spreads, a large crowd gathers in Jerusalem to see him. The people welcome Jesus as a king, waving palm branches and shouting 'Hosanna!' The Pharisees are concerned about the growing popularity of Jesus and the effect it may have on their authority. Jesus predicts his death and teaches about the necessity of losing one's life to gain eternal life. He refers to himself as the 'light' and encourages people to believe in him while they still have the opportunity. Despite his miracles and teachings, many people still do not believe in him, fulfilling the prophecy of Isaiah.
