Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance.

About this Chapter

In John chapter 20, it tells the story of the resurrection of Jesus and his appearances to his disciples. The chapter begins with Mary Magdalene going to the tomb early in the morning and finding it empty. She runs to tell Peter and John, who come to see for themselves. They find the linen wrappings but no body. Then Mary sees two angels in the tomb and turns around to see Jesus, but she mistakes him for the gardener. Jesus reveals himself to her and tells her to go and tell the disciples. Later that evening, the disciples are gathered together in a locked room, afraid of the Jewish leaders. Jesus suddenly appears among them and greets them with peace. He shows them his hands and side, and they rejoice at seeing the Lord. Jesus then breathes on them and says, 'Receive the Holy Spirit.' He commissions them to go and forgive sins, and explains that whoever believes in him will have eternal life. However, Thomas, one of the disciples, was not with them when Jesus appeared. When the other disciples tell him that they have seen the Lord, Thomas doubts and says he will not believe unless he sees Jesus' wounds for himself. A week later, Jesus appears again, this time with Thomas present. Jesus invites Thomas to touch his wounds, and Thomas believes, exclaiming, 'My Lord and my God!' Jesus then blesses those who have not seen him but still believe.
