Easy Bible・Acts 1
Acts 1:9
After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.
In Acts 1, Jesus appears to his disciples after his resurrection and spends forty days with them, teaching about the kingdom of God. He tells them to wait in Jerusalem for the Holy Spirit, who will empower them to be his witnesses to the ends of the earth. Before ascending into heaven, Jesus promises that they will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon them. After Jesus ascends, the disciples return to Jerusalem and gather in the upper room. There, they devote themselves to prayer along with Mary, the mother of Jesus, and other women. Peter addresses the group and explains that they need to choose a replacement for Judas, who betrayed Jesus and died. They select Matthias as the twelfth apostle by casting lots. Acts 1 sets the stage for the rest of the book, as Jesus' followers prepare to receive the Holy Spirit and continue the work he began. It emphasizes the importance of prayer and the need for unity among believers. The appointment of Matthias demonstrates the significance of leadership and the continuation of Jesus' mission through his chosen apostles.
