Acts 5:1
Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property.
In this chapter, we learn about Ananias and Sapphira, a couple who sold a piece of property but kept back part of the money for themselves while pretending to give it all to the apostles. When Ananias brought the money, Peter confronted him about lying to the Holy Spirit, and Ananias fell down and died. Later, Sapphira came in and also lied about the amount of money they received, and she also fell down and died. This story serves as a warning to us not to deceive others and God. Ananias and Sapphira's sin was not in keeping some of the money for themselves, but in pretending to give it all while lying about it. God desires honesty and integrity in our actions and motives. We should always be truthful and transparent in our dealings with others and with God. Additionally, this chapter shows the power and authority of the Holy Spirit. Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, was able to discern the deceit of Ananias and Sapphira. This event also caused great fear to come upon the church and those who heard about it. It reminds us of the seriousness of sin and the importance of living in reverence and obedience to God.
