Easy Bible・Acts 6
Acts 6:3
Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them
In Acts 6, the early church faced a problem of inequality in the distribution of food to widows. The apostles recognized the importance of addressing this issue, but they also understood that it would distract them from their primary responsibility of preaching and teaching. Therefore, they called together the believers and proposed the appointment of seven men to take care of the practical needs of the community. These men were to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. The proposal was well received, and the seven men were chosen, including Stephen and Philip. The apostles prayed for the seven men and laid their hands on them, commissioning them for their service. This act symbolized the transfer of authority and responsibility to the chosen individuals. The result of this appointment was that the word of God spread, and the number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly. Even some of the Jewish priests became followers of Jesus. The choosing of the seven in Acts 6 demonstrates the importance of addressing practical needs within the church community. By appointing deacons to take care of these needs, the apostles were able to focus on their calling to preach and teach. This passage also highlights the power of the Holy Spirit and the impact that faithful service can have on the growth of the church.
