Acts 7:51
"You stiff-necked people, with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You are just like your fathers: You always resist the Holy Spirit!
In Acts 7, Stephen gives a powerful defense of his faith before the Jewish council. He starts by recounting the history of the Israelites, reminding them of God's faithfulness and their ancestors' rejection of Him. Stephen accuses the council of resisting the Holy Spirit, just as their forefathers did. He boldly proclaims that they have betrayed and murdered the Righteous One, Jesus Christ. Stephen's words infuriate the council, and they gnash their teeth at him. But Stephen, filled with the Holy Spirit, looks up to heaven and sees Jesus standing at the right hand of God. He declares that he sees the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at God's right hand. This enrages the council even more, and they drag Stephen out of the city to stone him. As Stephen is being stoned, he prays, 'Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.' Then he falls on his knees and cries out, 'Lord, do not hold this sin against them.' With these words, Stephen imitates Jesus' forgiveness on the cross. He dies as the first Christian martyr, faithfully testifying to the truth of Jesus until the very end.
