Acts 16:31
They replied, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved--you and your household."
In Acts 16, Paul and his companions traveled to Philippi, a leading city in Macedonia. On the Sabbath day, they went outside the city gate to the river, where they expected to find a place of prayer. There they met a group of women, and Paul began to speak to them about Jesus. One of the women, Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth, was listening and the Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul's message. She and her household were baptized. Later, as Paul and Silas were going to the place of prayer, they were followed by a slave girl who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She kept shouting, 'These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved.' Paul, annoyed by her, turned and commanded the spirit to come out of her, and it left her. This caused her owners to be angry because their source of income was gone. They seized Paul and Silas, dragged them into the marketplace, and brought them before the magistrates. The magistrates ordered them to be beaten and thrown into prison. While in prison, Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God. Suddenly, there was a violent earthquake that shook the foundations of the prison. All the prison doors flew open, and everyone's chains came loose. The jailer, thinking that the prisoners had escaped, was about to kill himself, but Paul shouted, 'Don't harm yourself! We are all here!' The jailer called for lights, rushed in, and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. He asked them, 'Sirs, what must I do to be saved?' They replied, 'Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved--you and your household.' The jailer and his household were then baptized, and he showed kindness to Paul and Silas.
