Acts 17:16
While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was greatly distressed to see that the city was full of idols.

About this Chapter

In Acts 17, Paul arrives in Athens and is troubled by the many idols he sees in the city. He goes to the synagogue to reason with the Jews and God-fearing Greeks, and also engages in discussions with the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers. They bring him to the Areopagus, where he addresses the people and proclaims the message of Jesus and the resurrection. Paul's message in Athens focuses on the unknown God that the Athenians worshipped. He explains that this unknown God is the creator of the world and does not dwell in temples made by human hands. He emphasizes that God is near to everyone and that people should repent and turn to Him. However, not everyone in Athens accepts Paul's message. Some mock him, while others are interested and want to hear more. Paul leaves Athens, but some people believe and join him, including Dionysius, a member of the Areopagus, and a woman named Damaris.
