Easy Bible・Acts 19
Acts 19:23
About that time there arose a great disturbance about the Way.
In Acts 19, a riot breaks out in Ephesus because of the impact of the Gospel on the idol trade. Demetrius, a silversmith who made silver shrines of Artemis, gathered other craftsmen and stirred up the crowd, saying that their trade was in danger because of the preaching of Paul. The whole city was in an uproar, and they rushed into the theater, dragging two of Paul's companions with them. The crowd was filled with confusion, and some didn't even know why they were there. The Jews also joined in the uproar, but the city clerk managed to calm the crowd and disperse them. He reminded them that Ephesus was the guardian of the temple of Artemis and that Paul and his companions had not blasphemed the goddess. With his wise words, the city clerk restored order and prevented further violence. This incident in Ephesus shows the power of the Gospel to disrupt the status quo and challenge the prevailing beliefs and practices of a society. It also highlights the opposition and persecution that followers of Christ may face when their faith threatens the economic or cultural interests of others. However, it is encouraging to see how God can use even chaotic situations to bring about His purposes and protect His people.
