Romans 13:1
Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.
In this chapter, the apostle Paul teaches about the importance of submitting to governing authorities. He explains that all authorities are established by God and that those who rebel against them are rebelling against God Himself. Paul urges believers to obey the laws of the land and to pay their taxes, for this is their duty as citizens. He emphasizes that the purpose of government is to maintain law and order and to punish those who do wrong. Therefore, Christians should respect and submit to the authorities, not only out of fear of punishment, but also for the sake of conscience. Paul also reminds believers of the commandment to love one another. He explains that all the commandments, including those related to relationships with others, can be summed up in the command to love our neighbors as ourselves. He encourages believers to live in such a way that they fulfill this commandment, by loving and serving one another. He emphasizes that love does no harm to others, and therefore, by loving one another, believers fulfill the requirements of the law. In conclusion, Paul urges believers to wake up from their spiritual slumber and to live in a way that reflects their faith. He reminds them that the day of salvation is nearer now than when they first believed, and therefore, they should cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. He encourages them to live honorably, avoiding sinful behavior and instead, putting on the Lord Jesus Christ. By doing so, they will be equipped to resist temptation and to walk in the light, living as children of God.
