1 Corinthians 7:17
Nevertheless, each one should retain the place in life that the Lord assigned to him and to which God has called him. This is the rule I lay down in all the churches.
In this chapter, the apostle Paul addresses various issues related to marriage, singleness, and the Christian life. He begins by emphasizing the importance of each person living in the calling they have received from God. Paul encourages those who are married to remain in their marriage and those who are single to remain single, as both states can be used for God's glory. He also advises against divorce, but acknowledges that in cases where an unbelieving spouse chooses to leave, the believer is not bound to the marriage. Paul then discusses the benefits of remaining unmarried, stating that it allows for undivided devotion to the Lord. However, he also recognizes that not everyone has the gift of singleness, and it is better to marry than to burn with passion. Paul gives instructions to those who are engaged, encouraging them to consider the present distress and to make their decision with wisdom and discernment. The apostle concludes the chapter by addressing the issue of mixed marriages, where one spouse is a believer and the other is not. Paul advises believers to remain with their unbelieving spouse if the unbeliever is willing to live with them, as the believer's faith can have a positive influence on the household. However, if the unbeliever chooses to leave, the believer is not obligated to try to keep them. Paul reminds the Corinthians that they were called to live in peace and that God has called them to a life of holiness.
