Galatians 5:1
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

About this Chapter

In Galatians 5, the apostle Paul emphasizes the freedom that believers have in Christ. He starts by urging the Galatians to stand firm in the freedom that Christ has set them free, and not to be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. He warns them that if they allow themselves to be circumcised, they will be obligated to obey the whole law, and Christ will be of no value to them. Paul then assures them that through faith in Christ, they are justified and have been set free from the bondage of the law. Paul goes on to explain that the only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love. He warns against indulging in sinful desires, as it goes against the Spirit. He lists the acts of the flesh, such as sexual immorality, impurity, idolatry, hatred, and jealousy, and emphasizes that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. On the other hand, Paul describes the fruit of the Spirit, which includes love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. He encourages believers to live by the Spirit, crucifying the sinful nature with its passions and desires. He concludes by reminding them that since they belong to Christ, they should keep in step with the Spirit and not become conceited or provoke one another.
