Hebrews 5:8
Although he was a son, he learned obedience from what he suffered
Hebrews 5 talks about Jesus being our High Priest. The chapter starts by explaining that every high priest is selected from among the people and is appointed to represent them in matters related to God. The high priest is able to deal gently with the ignorant and wayward because he himself is subject to weakness. In the same way, Jesus was also appointed by God as a High Priest. He offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was the Son, he learned obedience from what he suffered and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him. The chapter goes on to explain that Jesus is a high priest in the order of Melchizedek. Unlike the Levitical priests who were limited by their mortality, Jesus holds his priesthood permanently because he lives forever. He is able to save completely those who come to God through him, since he always lives to intercede for them. Jesus is the perfect High Priest who is able to sympathize with our weaknesses because he himself was tempted in every way, yet he did not sin. Therefore, let us approach God's throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. In conclusion, Hebrews 5 teaches us that Jesus is our High Priest who is able to understand and empathize with our weaknesses. He offered up prayers and petitions to God and learned obedience through suffering. As the perfect High Priest, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him. Let us approach God with confidence, knowing that we can find mercy and grace through Jesus, our High Priest.
