About this Chapter

In Hebrews chapter 7, the author discusses the superiority of Melchizedek's priesthood over the Levitical priesthood. He begins by introducing Melchizedek, the king of Salem and a priest of God Most High. Melchizedek blessed Abraham when Abraham returned from battle and gave him a tenth of everything. The author then highlights the significance of Melchizedek's name, which means 'king of righteousness' and 'king of peace'. He explains that Melchizedek's priesthood is greater than the Levitical priesthood because even Abraham, the ancestor of the Levites, paid a tithe to Melchizedek. The author goes on to explain that the Levitical priesthood, which was established by the law of Moses, was temporary and imperfect. The priests of the Levitical order had to offer sacrifices daily for their own sins and for the sins of the people. However, Jesus, who is from the order of Melchizedek, became a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. Jesus, as the perfect and sinless High Priest, offered Himself as the ultimate sacrifice for sins once and for all. The author concludes by emphasizing the superiority of Jesus' priesthood over the Levitical priesthood. Jesus, being without sin, is able to save completely those who come to God through Him. He is the mediator of a better covenant, established on better promises. Unlike the Levitical priests who were limited by death, Jesus lives forever and continues to intercede for His people. Therefore, the author encourages the readers to hold firmly to their faith in Jesus, who is the eternal and perfect High Priest.
