About this Chapter

Hebrews 11 is often referred to as the 'Faith Hall of Fame' because it lists many Old Testament heroes who demonstrated great faith in God. The chapter begins by defining faith as the assurance of things hoped for and the conviction of things not seen. The chapter goes on to provide examples of faith in action, starting with Abel, who offered a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain, and Enoch, who was taken up to heaven without experiencing death. It also mentions Noah, who built an ark when God warned him about the coming flood, and Abraham, who obeyed God's call to leave his homeland and go to a place that God would show him. The author of Hebrews highlights the faith of other Old Testament figures such as Sarah, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, and Rahab. He describes their acts of faith and the rewards they received from God. The chapter concludes by emphasizing that all these people lived by faith, even though they did not receive the full fulfillment of God's promises during their lifetime.
