Hebrews 12:1
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

About this Chapter

Hebrews 12 encourages believers to run the race of faith with endurance, looking to Jesus as the ultimate example. Just as athletes train and endure hardships to win a prize, Christians should persevere in their faith, knowing that God disciplines them as a loving Father. They are encouraged to lay aside sin and anything that hinders their spiritual progress, and to fix their eyes on Jesus, who endured the cross for the joy set before Him. The chapter also reminds believers that they have not come to a physical mountain like the Israelites did when they received the law, but to Mount Zion, the heavenly Jerusalem. They are part of the new covenant and have access to the presence of God through Jesus. The writer of Hebrews warns against rejecting God's voice, as the Israelites did at Mount Sinai. Instead, believers are urged to listen to God's voice and not harden their hearts. They are reminded that God is a consuming fire and that it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
