About this Chapter

In this chapter, John sees a vision of a great prostitute sitting on a scarlet beast with seven heads and ten horns. The woman is dressed in purple and scarlet, adorned with gold, precious stones, and pearls. She holds a golden cup filled with abominable things and the filth of her adulteries. The beast on which the woman sits represents the world's political powers and their alliance with false religion. The seven heads are seven hills, symbolizing the city of Rome, and the ten horns represent ten kings who will give their power and authority to the beast. The woman is described as the great prostitute who seduces the nations with her immoral practices. She represents the corrupt and idolatrous system that opposes God and leads people astray. The inhabitants of the earth, except for those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life, are deceived by her.
