Revelation 20:4
I saw thrones on which were seated those who had been given authority to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony for Jesus and because of the word of God. They had not worshiped the beast or his image and had not received his mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

About this Chapter

In this chapter, John sees an angel coming down from heaven, holding the key to the Abyss and a great chain. The angel seizes the dragon, who is the devil or Satan, and binds him for a thousand years. During this time, Christ reigns with his people and they live and reign with him. This period is often referred to as the millennium. After the thousand years are over, Satan is released from his prison and he deceives the nations, gathering them for battle against God's people. However, fire comes down from heaven and devours them. Then, the devil is thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet are, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. John also sees thrones, and those seated on them are given authority to judge. He sees the souls of those who had been beheaded for their testimony about Jesus and for not worshiping the beast or its image. They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy are those who share in the first resurrection, for they will not be hurt by the second death.
