Beloved soul, In the parable of the sower, as told by our Lord in the Gospel of Matthew, we find profound wisdom in the depiction of different types of soil, representing the hearts of those who receive the Word of God. Let us reflect upon the rocky soil and the thorny soil, for each bears its own lesson. The rocky soil, as described in Matthew 13:20-21, represents those who receive the Word with joy but have no deep roots. "The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away." These hearts are quick to accept the message with enthusiasm, yet, without depth, they falter when trials arise. In contrast, the thorny soil is depicted in Matthew 13:22. "The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful." Here, the Word is sown, but the cares of the world and the lure of riches ensnare the heart, suffocating the growth of faith and rendering it unproductive. Thus, my dear one, the rocky soil symbolizes a lack of spiritual depth and resilience, while the thorny soil illustrates a heart divided by worldly concerns and material temptations. In Matthew 13:5-6, Jesus describes seeds falling on rocky ground with little soil. They quickly sprout but wither under the sun due to shallow roots. This illustrates those who receive the word joyfully but fall away when troubles arise, lacking deep faith.

Prayer

God our Father, thank You for Your Word that guides us. Help us understand the difference between the rocky soil and the thorny soil in the parable of the sower. May we not be like the rocky soil, which lacks depth, or the thorny soil, which is choked by life's worries. Instead, let us be fertile soil, ready to receive and nurture Your Word. Grant us wisdom and strength to grow deeply in faith and bear fruit for Your kingdom. In Jesus Christ's name, we pray. Amen.
