Ah, dear soul, as we traverse the sacred corridors of history, we find ourselves drawn to the gentle beginnings of the church's earthly shepherds. The first to be recognized as the bishop of Rome, and thereby considered the first pope by tradition, was the apostle Peter. A humble fisherman called by Jesus Himself, Peter's heart was transformed into a vessel of grace, becoming a rock upon which the early church was built. In the words of our Holy Scriptures, Jesus proclaimed to Peter, "And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it." (Matthew 16:18, NIV). This divine commission bestowed upon Peter a unique role, nurturing the fledgling community of believers with love and guidance.
