In the Book of Matthew, chapter 8, verse 4, Jesus, after healing a leper, instructs him with these words: "See that you don’t tell anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift Moses commanded, as a testimony to them." This directive from Jesus refers to the Mosaic Law outlined in Leviticus 14:2-32. In Leviticus, the process for the ceremonial cleansing of a leper involves several offerings and rituals. Initially, the priest would perform a ritual outside the camp using two live clean birds, cedar wood, scarlet yarn, and hyssop. One bird would be sacrificed over fresh water, and the living bird would be dipped into the blood of the sacrificed bird and then released. Following this, the person cleansed would wash their clothes, shave off all their hair, and bathe in water. Afterward, on the eighth day, they were to bring offerings to the temple, which included two male lambs, one ewe lamb, fine flour mixed with oil, and a log of oil. These offerings were presented as a guilt offering, sin offering, and burnt offering, signifying the individual's purification and restoration to the community. In this beautiful narrative, Jesus emphasizes obedience to the Law and the importance of testimony.
